Have you considered metal braces but decided that they seem like more trouble than they're worth? Clear, removable ClearCorrect braces are the perfect option for people who want to straighten their teeth but don't like the idea of living with wires and brackets for several years. New Port Richey, FL, dentist, Dr. James Lewis, answers some questions about clear braces.
What are clear braces?
Clear braces look a lot like the mouthguards you may have worn to play sports. ClearCorrect's aligner trays fit over your teeth just like mouthguards do, but are custom designed to fit your mouth. You'll wear the trays on both your top and bottom teeth for about one to two years, depending on your age and your orthodontic issues.
Are clear braces as effective as traditional braces?
If you're not familiar with clear braces, it may seem to hard to believe that you don't need wires and brackets to move your teeth. ClearCorrect uses a set of multiple aligner trays to correct the position of your teeth. Every two or three weeks, you'll put away the trays you have been wearing and begin using another set. The trays put gentle pressure on your teeth, which gradually realigns them.
ClearCorrect treats the same orthodontic problems that traditional braces do. They're ideal at correcting overbites and underbites, but they also relieve crowding and close gaps between teeth. Clear braces can also handle open bites and cross bites.
Do I have to stay away from certain foods?
Because metal brace wires can break, people who wear traditional braces are warned to avoid hard foods that can damage them. In addition to raw apples, carrots and other hard foods, you'll also have to give up sticky foods if you wear metal or ceramic braces. There are no restrictions with ClearCorrect because the aligner trays are removed at mealtimes.
How do I get clear braces?
During your visit to Dr. Lewis' New Port Richey, FL, office, he'll let you know if ClearCorrect is a good option for you. If it is, he'll take digital impressions of your mouth. Those impressions, in addition to photographs of your mouth and X-rays, will be used to create a series of trays specifically designed to correct your orthodontic issue. He'll send your prescription to ClearCorrect, and in a few weeks, you'll return to the office to get your aligner trays and receive care instructions.
