Find out why so many people with tooth loss are turning to dental implants.
Tooth loss isn’t something anyone anticipates or prepares for; fortunately, our New Port Richey, FL, cosmetic dentist Dr. James Lewis is here to provide you with the very best restorations available. Modern dentistry is certainly incredible and it allows us to offer our patients the next best thing to real teeth: a dental implant.
A dental implant is a small metal post that is designed to fit into the jawbone to replace your missing tooth roots. The roots of the tooth are important because they also provide the jawbone with ample stimulation to remain strong and healthy. Without these roots the jawbone would deteriorate, affecting your overall facial structure and causing sagging and premature lines and wrinkles. Implants are the only tooth replacement that can actually prevent jawbone loss.
The implant is placed during a minor surgical procedure in which our New Port Richey, FL, dentist will need to open up the gums to reveal the jawbone. You will receive topical anesthesia beforehand so you won’t feel a thing during the procedure. Once the implant is placed within the jawbone we will give your mouth several months to heal before taking the next step.
During the healing stage, a pretty amazing phenomenon occurs: the jawbone and tissue begin to fuse around the implant. Once this happens the implant and jawbone become one, making your implant a permanent restoration that is durable enough to last the rest of your life with the proper maintenance and care.
There are different kinds and styles of implants out there and before we begin the process we will sit down and discuss the type that is right for you. Some implants will require an abutment to be placed over top of the implant to connect the dental crown to the implant itself; however, some implants come with a built-in abutment. If the abutment needs to be placed we will need to perform another minor procedure to open up the gums to reveal the implant. Next, the abutment is attached to the top of the implant.
Once the abutment is in place and the gums around the implant have healed we will place the permanent crown and cement it. Of course, if you need to replace multiple or all of your teeth, multiple implants can also be placed throughout the jawbone to stabilize and support false teeth such as dentures.
If you are interested in getting dental implants in New Port Richey or Trinity, FL, then don’t hesitate to call Dr. Lewis to schedule a consultation with him. Get one step closer to the smile that you remember.
