CEREC Dental CrownsThere are several restorative procedures, but one of the most efficient is getting CEREC crowns at your New Port Richey, FL, dentist.

CEREC crowns are made in your dentist's office with the use of Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing, also known as CAD/CAM. This process saves you time and the hassle of replacing temporary crown restorations with permanent restorations

Crowns are porcelain caps usually made at a lab when your New Port Richey dentist takes an impression of your teeth to have them custom made. This process takes time and you'll need to use temporary crowns until the lab sends your permanent ones to your doctor.

Instead of your doctor taking impressions of your teeth, they'll dust reflective powder on your teeth then scan them with a wand that'll take digital pictures of your mouth. The images generate a 3D model of your teeth using CAD/CAM software.

A block of ceramic similar in color to your teeth is sent to a milling machine that'll carve it into the 3D image produced by the CAD/CAM software in about five minutes.

Your doctor will then place the crown in your mouth and you're set to go.

There are several procedures that use dental crowns:

  • Attaching bridges
  • Covering an existing filling that may be dislocated
  • Covering stained or discolored teeth
  • Covering dental implants

If you want to properly care for you new crowns, follow these steps:

  • Floss and brush your teeth. Make sure you remove built-up plaque on your teeth.
  • Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can reduce how long your crowns last. Use a mouth guard or splints to prevent wearing down your crowns.
  • Eat healthier. Don't bite into ice and avoid sugary foods like soda and candy.

Dental crowns reinforce teeth so that they may withstand various degrees of pressure. For more information on CEREC crowns and what they can do for you, contact your New Port Richey, FL, as soon as possible.

BaseballsFranciscoLindorShinesasMrSmile

At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!

Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”

We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:

Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.

Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

If you’d like more information about oral health or cosmetic dentistry, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation. You can also learn more by reading the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Beautiful Smiles by Design” and “The Impact of a Smile Makeover.”

Dental ImplantsDental implants fill the gaps in your smile, but that's not all they do. This innovative restoration method, offered by your New Port Richey and Trinity, FL, dentist Dr. James Lewis, provides a few other benefits.

What benefits do dental implants offer?

Implants offer these smile-boosting advantages:

  • Complete Restoration: Thanks to dental implants, it's now possible to replace your entire missing tooth. Implants are small posts made of titanium, a metal that has unique bone-bonding properties. Dental implants serve as artificial roots and are topped with dental crowns once they've bonded fully to your jawbone.
  • Comfort: Poorly fitting dentures can sometimes move when you bite into hard foods, causing painful gum irritation. Because your new crowns are securely attached to your dental implants, slipping and sliding won't be a problem. In fact, your new teeth will feel just like your natural teeth.
  • Better Biting Power: Without replacement roots to anchor restorations, it's difficult or impossible to bite and tear hard foods with your teeth. Dental implants solve that problem by providing a stable foundation for your crowns, which gives you the ability to enjoy your favorite foods.
  • Improved Appearance: Dental implants fill the gaps in your smile and prevent your other teeth from shifting, a common problem after the loss of a tooth.
  • No Jaw Problems: In addition to anchoring your teeth, your roots also provide constant stimulation to the underlying jawbone. Without that stimulation, the bone may begin to shrink and weaken. As your jawbone withers away, you may notice that your facial muscles begin to sag, your bite changes and some of your teeth start to loosen. Dental implants help you avoid these problems by providing the same stimulation as your roots.
  • Versatility: There are no limits when it comes to dental implants. They're an excellent restoration option no matter how many teeth you would like to replace. Although a 1:1 implant/crown ratio is required to replace a single tooth, you only need a few implants to secure an implant-supported denture or bridge. Dentures can be attached with as few as four implants per arch in some cases.

Your smile is one of your most important features. Unfortunately, if your teeth are damaged, discolored or unattractive, you may not want toveneers share your smile with the world. Our Trinity and New Port Richey, FL, dentist, Dr. James Lewis, explains how veneers can change the appearance of your teeth.

Veneers offer smile-changing possibilities

Small flaws in your smile can be easily concealed with the addition of porcelain veneers. The thin, tooth-shaped shells are cemented on to the fronts of your teeth, providing excellent coverage for minor damage and imperfections. Veneers are an excellent cosmetic option if your teeth are healthy and in good condition.

How veneers can transform your smile

Veneers cover up the things you don't like about your smile. They make minor imperfections that are extremely noticeable disappear, such as cracks, chips, and uneven surfaces. Even gaps between teeth can be treated with veneers. Adding a few veneers to your teeth closes up slight spaces between teeth, improving your smile.

Veneers are very popular with people who have discolored teeth. Teeth tend to change color if you've experienced some sort of trauma, such as a blow to your mouth, or if you took the antibiotic tetracycline as a child. Some dental treatments, including root canals and large fillings, can also cause teeth to darken. Adding a veneer to a discolored tooth instantly lightens and brightens it.

When your teeth vary widely in shape or size, veneers can be a good solution. They increase uniformity and are an excellent solution if a few teeth have become shorter due to grinding. If you're a grinder, you'll want to start wearing a nightguard when you receive your veneers. The nightguard, which is constructed from an impression taken in our Trinity and New Port Richey area office, prevents damage to your veneers and teeth due to grinding or clenching.

If you're unhappy with the results of teeth whitening or don't want to whiten your teeth every few years, veneers may be a better option. Veneers are available in a vast array of shades of white, making it possible to choose the ideal shade for your smile. Using lighter or darker dental cement will also help you achieve the level of whiteness you prefer.

Veneers are a key part of a complete smile makeover -- especially when other treatments like braces or tooth whitening won't help your veneerscase. No matter your cosmetic problem, there’s a good chance that veneers can fix it. Here are a few of the most attractive advantages of getting veneers at the office of Dr. James Lewis in New Port Richey, FL.

Covers Up Even the Worst Imperfections
The great thing about veneers is that they can cover up a wide array of dental problems. When you smile, only the front side of your front teeth are visible and that is where the veneers are bonded. Here are a few common issues that may call for veneers:

- Broken or chipped teeth.
- Teeth that are too small, causing gaps.
- Intrinsic staining (at the inner layers of the tooth) that can’t be bleached.
- Protruding or crowded teeth.

A Relatively Fast Procedure
After just two appointments at Dr. Lewis' New Port Richey office, you can go home with a new smile thanks to veneers. At the first appointment, the dentist will remove a small amount of tooth enamel, then take a mold of your teeth. That mold will allow a technician to create custom veneers. At the next appointment, the dentist will use a strong bonding agent to attach the veneers to your teeth, then contour and polish them to perfection. You’ll be amazed by how dramatically your smile has changed when you look in the mirror at the end of your appointment.

A Beautiful Smile for 20 Plus Years
After the veneers have been installed you'll have a beautiful smile for up to 20 years. The length of time they will last depends on your commitment to dental and oral health. Keep your veneers clean and free from debris. Also, floss thoroughly every day to reduce the chance of gingivitis or periodontitis—gum disease puts the tooth and the bonded veneer at risk.

Take the First Step
It's time to take the first step toward having a smile that you can feel good about. Call New Port Richey, FL, dentist, Dr. Lewis, at (727) 372-7887 today to talk about dental veneers.
