We’ve become accustomed to technology in many aspects of our lives, but the CEREC system for crowns still seems almost like magic. CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, refers to a system of integrated technologies that allow for better looking, longer lasting, and more convenient crown replacements. The system is used for over 6 million crown replacements every year, and continues evolving to remain on the front lines of quality dental care.
The Technology
There are three main components to the CEREC process - the camera, the computer, and the manufacturing. First, an intra-oral camera is used to take a series of photographs that allow a computer to create an entire virtual model of your bite and the relevant teeth. Your dentist then uses the computer model to develop a custom design, and then sends the design to the office milling machine. In less than fifteen minutes, the machine creates your custom crown out of an advanced biocompatible ceramic, color-matched to blend perfectly with the rest of your teeth.
The Benefits
It is rare that the extremes of quality and convenience intersect, but with CEREC crowns, you get only the best of both. No plaster molds, no second appointments, no waiting weeks for an offsite laboratory’s product. Your crown is designed, custom-made, and placed all in the duration of a single dentist appointment. This expediency comes at no reduction to the longevity or aesthetic appeal of your crown - in fact, CEREC crowns have been clinically shown to last longer than gold crowns and laboratory manufactured crowns.* Additionally, due to the high-resolution cameras, sophisticated computer design, and extremely accurate diamond-tipped milling machine, CEREC-made crowns fit your mouth precisely and look more natural.
